Outside is the remains of an old traditional church once you walk inside you are instantly greeted by the vibrance of the International Church of Cannabis. Artists Kenny Scarf and Okuda San Miguel worked together to create an inviting and unique experience for church members. The front portion of the

church is a lounging section with a variety of vintage seating options and various artists’ paintings and sculptures on the walls for purchase. There is an outdoor space for public consumption that has a modern day feel complete with astroturf and many tables and chairs perfect for an afternoon smoke sesh. The hang out area reminded me of an arcade prize station with the glass cases filled with trinkets and the chips and candy for sale.
The real sight to see is the cathedral. Walking into the cathedral you get the feeling of being in church the grandiose sensation of the tall ceilings and large windows – think of a modern day Sistine Chapel for cannabis praise. The back wall depicts various bird men sitting near a tree with the night sky in the background leaving the meaning to the figment of your imagination.
Instead of seeing scripture in the pews the only thing filling the pews right now are ashtrays for your convenience.
Don’t expect there to be readings from the Bible and listening to traditional sermons. This church is nondenominational following its own beat of the drum. The group considers themselves to be Elevationists using cannabis as a tool to connect to higher spirituality whatever that might mean to you. Whether you are a Buddhist or were shunned from the Catholic Church the International Church of Cannabis welcomes you with open arms.
While some have dismissed the church as being sacrilegious and an excuse for a social pot club that could not be farther from the truth. The group encourages members to use cannabis as a tool for self discovery. People are realizing that many religions do not align with their evolving personal benefits. The International Church of Cannabis is a church where people can go to explore those new notions. A place to worship and pray at your own accord with the assistance of the powerful healing plant cannabis.
